I met Roger Mitchell through ebay sales. He was buying up many of the older versions of his own books, rewriting and re-publishing them into a new and better format.
Compared with many of his older works (I didn’t wish to sell all of them) the newer versions are so much more accurate due to changes in the landscape such as housing tracts, military reserves and ranges, and the ever disrupting actions of the BLM to close or block old byways and road access to former open areas.
In this book, the reader will find many tips such as extra supplies to take along, tools, tire notes, area facilities, camping tips, and probably most important, what one will find at the end of the road; though that doesn’t deter many, for the trip is the journey, not the end.
Mitchell has upgraded road conditions, allowing the explorer to decide where to stop or detour, before a flat tire, or an impossibly stuck vehicle. Included are overlays and mileage, several photogaphs, topo maps focused on the roadways and access variables, and where one will likely run into trouble- rangers, extreme folks, isolation, and other challenges.
Also where to go to harvest pine nuts, experience fall beauty, or for the best views of the valleys and mountain ranges. Some fishing or hunting info is included, as well as contacts where you can obtain more specific or timely knowledge amd permits.
Precariously, I would suggest taking a gun along, an ice chest with cold beer(whether or not YOU actually drink beer is beside the point), pop, a few fresh bones for the dog, some carrots or celery, maybe even some cigarettes. You never know who you’ll meet in the sticks, but friendship or the permission to pass can be had with a cold beer for the people, bones for his dogs, carrots for his horse or donkey, cigarettes for one who offers advice.
Maybe one could add a t-shirt, socks, or clothing too, but that would be better for the 2nd visit.
Last but not least, don’t forget the metal detector(s)- one for relics, the other for gold nuggets, as well as a few extra buckets for whatever you happen to find or pickup along your hike
